BERKLEY HAILS $135 MILLION IN SNPLMA FUNDING FOR PARKS, TRAILS AND PROTECTION OF NEVADA’S NATURAL TREASURES
Interior Secretary Salazar Releases Latest Round of Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act Projects
(September 4, 2009 – Las Vegas) Congresswoman Shelley Berkley today issued the following statement on the announcement of $135 million in funding through the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act (SNPLMA) to improve recreational opportunities in the Las Vegas Valley and for protection of open spaces and natural treasures around the Silver State.
“Since its enactment more than a decade ago, the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act has improved our quality of life, protected our environment and provided vital resources for our community.
“The funding generated by land sales authorized under this innovative law has helped to expand recreational opportunities in southern Nevada, including the Clark County Wetlands Park, Las Vegas Springs Preserve and our new world-class shooting range. And families and visitors are enjoying the addition of more parks and trails around the Las Vegas Valley than ever before as a result of this law.
“The Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act has helped to finance local water infrastructure needs, while providing needed resources for local schools. The funding from land sales in Clark County has also enabled our state to better preserve and protect unique natural treasures and beautiful open spaces, including Red Rock, Lake Mead, Great Basin National Park, Lake Tahoe and Mount Charleston.
“As a fellow Westerner, I welcome Secretary of the Interior Salazar to the Silver State and join today in expressing our appreciation for the approval granted for this latest round of activities authorized under the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act.
