BERKLEY SECURES FUNDING FOR TWO ADDITIONAL RESTORED NEON SIGNS ALONG LAS VEGAS BOULEVARD
*** $300,000 Grant Will Help Secure Visitor’s Center, Neon Boneyard Storage Facility ***
(October 9, 2009 -- Washington, D.C.) Congresswoman Shelley Berkley has secured more than $300,000 in federal funding for the restoration of two more historic neon signs to be displayed along Las Vegas Boulevard. These funds will also help secure the neon boneyard where the classic signs from the Las Vegas of the 50’s and 60’s are stored awaiting restoration and display. “Neon is to Las Vegas what skyscrapers are to Manhattan and we are proud to be able to restore and display these unique memories of our city’s development as a world famous destination. These signs along Las Vegas Boulevard enchant visitors and locals alike and each tells the story of our past in its own way. Their glow adds even more excitement to this stretch of road which has been designated as a National Scenic Byway,” said Berkley. This funding will further enhance one of the only nighttime scenic byways in America by restoring two culturally historic neon signs and installing them along the median on Las Vegas Boulevard in downtown Las Vegas.
This project will also protect the Visitor’s Center and adjacent historic neon sign boneyard where dozens of signs are stored. The center, located on Las Vegas Boulevard, gets a great deal of nighttime pedestrian traffic when the center is closed.
