Berkley Announces More Than $1 Million to Fight Violence against Women in Reno

(July 20, 2011 -- Washington, D.C.) Congresswoman Shelley Berkley today announced a $1,050,000 grant for the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges (NCJFCJ) in Reno to help combat violence against women. This crucial funding will be used to increase victim safety and bolster accountability for sex offenders in the Reno area. Throughout her 12 years in Congress, Berkley has been a passionate supporter of providing federal funds to Nevada’s communities to fight violence against women and is a strong opponent of those who want to eliminate such funding.

"Crimes of domestic or sexual violence have devastating consequences for women personally, as well as for their families and for society as a whole," said Berkley. "As Nevadans, it is all of our responsibilities to ensure that our friends and neighbors feel safe in their communities. This grant provides crucial resources that will not only help struggling victims, but help ensure sex offenders never harm women again."

The funding is being awarded by the Office on Violence Against Women and will help implement the NCJFCJ’s Office on Violence Against Women Technical Assistance Program.

The National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges has extensive expertise in providing high-level training and technical assistance. For more than twenty years, the Family Violence Department (FVD) of NCJFCJ has developed, tested and promoted improved court responses to domestic violence, which has led to reform in the ways courts and communities respond to domestic violence.
