Berkley Backs Blue Ribbon Commission Call for End of Yucca Mountain, Elimination of Laws Targeting Nevada as Nation’s Nuclear Garbage Dump

(January 26, 2012 – Washington, D.C.)  Congresswoman Shelley Berkley today released the following statement on a new report from the Blue Ribbon Commission on America's Nuclear Future (www.brc.gov) that calls for ending the failed Yucca Mountain Project and changing existing laws that target Nevada as a site for the nation's high-level nuclear waste.  Berkley's statement appears below:

"The changes in nuclear waste policy called for by the Commission will lift a threat to Nevada's future that has hung like a dark cloud over the Silver State for decades.  This report highlights the utter failure of efforts to force Yucca Mountain on Nevada families and businesses who oppose more wasteful spending on attempts to turn our home into a nuclear garbage dump.  These findings represent a stark warning about the need to move forward immediately on securing nuclear waste at existing reactor sites in dry cask storage as I have advocated for years."
